That's the kind of thing that actually makes me ashamed to be Canadian. I honestly have no idea how those people can DO that. Just knowing it happens makes me want to cry. I've definitely signed the petition and I wish the Canadian government would do something about it *finally*. It's been way too long, and seal bashing is NOT okay.

At least some people have their heads screwed on right, and this is one more reason I love LUSH. They actually give a damn. xx

Ok,
I'm a Canadian with family in the northern part and happen to be aboriginal. Now I'm not saying that this is why all people do it, but they don't live the way we do and it is food and warmth and survival. It is the same as you killing cows to eat them, they just happen to be cuter. It is absurd to me that people don't look into the facts sometimes. Yeah there are people doing it in the wrong but you go look at the minorities there, they don't even have proper stores like we do so it would be impossible to survive without some of these old survival techniques.

I signed the petiton. I cannot believe that people who hunt for seals would do such a thing!!

@leanneforreal: I understand food, really. What I don't agree with is doing it simply for the fur trade.

The amount of seal fur in tourist stores is absurd. And we don't kill cows by smashing their skulls in with a hammer, either. I just don't think that the mass industry is cool.

Like I said though, I do realize that the seal is food for certain people, but "seal clubbers" do this enmasse, and in such a brutally horrific way, just to sell the fur, and *that* is what I don't agree with.

Mm... one question I do have is simply: If the seals don't look beautiful, would they have gotten our attention?

Plus, about the way they're slaughtered, isn't the way other creatures are slaughtered horrific too? Like fish basically are suffocated to death, aren't they?

At the end of the day, I think we need to make sober and informed judgment and not be be swayed primarily by emotions. Then only can we make responsible decisions.

Killing stuff is not nice, no, but in the same respect I believe that killing for the sake of killing and not survival is what everyone is so outraged about, regardless of how "cute" the animal is or not, clubbing any animals (including humans) is digusting.

Vix said...

My response to that is, if seals weren't cute it would be a non-issue because people don't want ugly fur to begin with.

If people are hunting seals for food and for survival, then that is fair enough, as I said previously. But once again, what I disagree with is the fact that a large portion of seals killed are just for the sake of the fur trade. It's no more okay in my mind to do this than it is for poachers in Africa to skin tigers, or hack off bear and gorilla feet, and then just leave the steaming carcasses behind like so much trash.

And honestly? If it were goats or sloths or anything else that were being killed *just* for fur, then yes, I would still have a problem with it.

Please do not take this the wrong way.

The point of this petition was not to gain your respect. Understand what it means to sign the petition, what it means to be part of the movement for the ethical treatment of animals. Had LUSH not made it convenient for you to post about it on your blog, would you consider for a moment, how animals are being treated just outside of your own city in farms?

I am not trying to call you out.. because your blog post is legit, and has probably opened more people's eyes to things they never would have considered. But the cause goes beyond just signing the petition and getting people to stop hunting seals. The compassion toward animals should manifest in other areas of your life as well.

Working on that myself..

just thought you should know that that lush campaign isn't exactly being truthful.
1). see that cute little white seal right there? yeah, it's illegal to kill those and has been for a very long time. lush is using their cute image in order to get sympathy - basically its propaganda.
2). if you're going to be against the seal hunt, then i would expect you to be against the killing of cows for food or leather, or chicken for food, or pigs for food, or any animal that is used for food etc. if not, then you are quite simply being a hypocrite.

i just really don't get people who are ~*so against*~ the seal hunt, and yet go out and buy leather shoes and leather bags and go eat chicken or beef for lunch. it makes no sense and its completely hypocritical.

Vix said...

In short, because when a cow is killed, all of it is used. It's eaten for survival and the "leftovers" are what is used to make leather jackets and shoes.

The seal hunt that Lush is talking about, however, is about killing baby seals, skinning them, and leaving the carcass.

There is a difference between using animals for survival, and then killing them for vanity.

And the last time I was in Banff, there is seal fur in all of the tourist stores so it can't be THAT illegal.

All the seal gets used. Meat is eaten. Skin is used for blankets and clothes. Sure the flippers are even eaten. My dad eats seal flippers.

I don't believe in killing the babies. But I don't believe in killing baby cows either, but I'll still eat cow.

i don't think most people understand WHY the canadians hold these annual seal clubbing whtevers. although they're cute and cuddly looking, they're overpopulated. it's like killing deer here in the u.s. deer is overpopulated and you don't see people signing petitions saying how cruel and unusual it is. also, clubbing the seals is how the people get their INCOME. money for food, clothes. the ESSENTIALS FOR LIVING.
